>Snow, sleet, winds, chill on tap for much of the day

When it comes to today's weather, be thankful that it won't be worse.

A winter weather advisory in effect for all Western New York until 4 p.m. is just an advisory, not a warning. It's 1 to 3 inches of snow that's expected, not 1 to 3 feet.

Nevertheless, there's plenty of wintry misery in the outlook -- periods of sleet before noon, then snow; temperatures dropping below freezing, bottoming out about 25; north winds gusting to more than 25 mph. Travel will be treacherous.

Colder air following the storm may set off lake-effect snow Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service cautions. North winds would keep the snow in Chautauqua County on Friday, but a westerly flow on Saturday could bring more snow into the Buffalo area before milder weather returns on Sunday.

>Zoo will close today and reopen Friday

The Buffalo Zoo will be closed to the public today for the Thanksgiving Day holiday, spokeswoman Jennifer L. Fields reports. Regular hours at the zoo will resume at 10 a.m. Friday.

>Galleria mall adds 1,000 parking spaces

The Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga opened more than 1,000 new parking spaces on Wednesday, just in time for the busiest shopping season of the year.

The spaces are in the shopping mall's new parking garage on the northeast end of the complex along Galleria Drive near Sears. Additional overflow parking for nearly 200 cars is available in a new satellite parking lot on Galleria Drive next to the Postal Service branch. The new parking garage more than doubles the amount of space for valet parking.
