Die-hard Bills fan longs to win the big one

We asked. And you -- vanity license plate holders -- responded.

What we found out is that you want to advertise your cars, your hobbies, your pets, your favorite teams, your causes. Well over 100 of you shared your plates with us, so look for them occasionally in this spot.

Today's featured plate supports a pro football team that had a rough game Sunday night, but came within feet of a Super Bowl win once upon a time.

PLATE: B41D1E, with a Bills' helmet logo on the left side of the plate so there's no mistaking the message

ON: 1999 Gold Cadillac

OWNER: Bill Vogel of Lancaster, an engineer for NRG Energy

WHY: "My son suggested my vanity plate after hearing one too many stories about this season-ticket-holding, die-hard-football fan's lifelong pursuit of an NFL championship," said Vogel, whose been a fan since "I was a little kid playing football."

He watches the games from the Ralph's 45-yard line, nine rows behind the Bills' bench. Since the Super Bowl years, he held the plates (BILFAN) and his brother, Jim, has plates that optimistically proclaim: 2DABWL.

"It's been a lot of years of futility of being a Bills fan," said Vogel. "But I'm eternally optimistic. I'm loyal, through and through. I don't understand people who don't root for their home team."

This year, however, Bill Vogel decided he needed a punchier message and ordered new plates. "Since I was getting older, I was ensuring that everyone could guess the implication that all I want is a Super Bowl Championship 'before I die,' " said Vogel, who is 46.

The plates get plenty of response, especially while he's tailgating, with comments ranging from "never" to "I hope so, too."

"Actually," he said, "I thought Ralph Wilson might want to buy them off me."
