South End Falls vandals damage at least 25 cars

NIAGARA FALLS -- Vandals punctured or slashed tires on at least 25 cars, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage throughout the city's South End overnight Friday, police said.

Officers were still compiling damage reports late Saturday, according to Lt. John Dougherty. The attacks occurred between 9:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Most of the vandalism was centered on two parking lots -- the former South Junior High School lot in the 500 block of Portage Road and a lot in the 1300 block of Walnut Avenue.

Other areas struck included the 300 and 400 blocks of Portage Road, 1300 block of Fort Avenue and the 400 block of 13th Street, police said.

Suspect faces charges of shoplifting, assault

NIAGARA FALLS -- A shoplifter who attacked a supermarket manager trying to detain him shortly before 9 p.m. Friday was charged with third-degree robbery, Niagara Falls police said.

Michael A. Quarcini, 34, of Eighth Street tried to make off with shrimp valued at $54 in the Tops Market on Portage Road and a store manager who tried to stop him was punched in the mouth, police said.

Quarcini also was charged with petit larceny and third-degree assault.

Fire destroys garage 2 vehicles in Somerset

SOMERSET -- Two vehicles and a garage at 7348 Hoffman Road were destroyed by a fast-moving fire shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, Niagara County Sheriff's officials said.

Tools and equipment also were destroyed. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Images of two burglars captured on Falls video

NIAGARA FALLS -- A surveillance camera captured the images of two men burglarizing a 13th Street home after they kicked in a door between 1 and 1:25 p.m. Saturday, Niagara Falls police said.

The two stole video game components and cartridges valued at $900, police said. No one was home at the time.

Copper pipes, tire rims stolen from garage

NEWFANE -- A Coomer Road man said copper pipes and tire rims were stolen from a locked garage on Thursday.

The 47-year-old man told Niagara County sheriff's deputies that someone entered his unattached garage overnight in the 3000 block of Coomer Road and left behind a table saw, car jack and circular saw, but took a barrel of copper pipes valued at $300 and four car tire rims valued at $800.

Car, pickup looted of items worth $600

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are investigating the theft early Saturday of valuables worth $600 from a car and pickup truck owned by a Welch Avenue resident.

A window was smashed out of the car and a compact disc player stolen. Two toolboxes loaded with tools were taken from the pickup, police said.
