Mother Nature made sure Williamsville North will have to wait a day in its quest to reach the state Class A field hockey finals.
The Spartans and Ward Melville of Section XI were scoreless through 21 minutes Friday evening at Cicero-North Syracuse High School when lake-effect snow make it impossible to keep the field markers visible.
"By that time we'd had five or six [penalty] corners on them," said North coach Kris LaPaglia. "But they [the officials] used very good judgment because they just couldn't keep the snow off the lines. Once they plowed it, it just kept on coming. It became very, very messy."
The game will resume at 2 p.m. today with the other semifinal between Saratoga of Section II and Lakeland of Section I to follow at 4. The championship match is now scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday.
FOOTBALL: The Harvard Cup semifinals will be played today at All High Stadium with third-seeded Riverside (6-3) to face second-seeded Grover Cleveland (7-2) at 11 a.m. and fourth-seeded Lafayette (5-4) against top-seeded and two-time defending champion McKinley (9-0) at 2 p.m. The winners play for the title Thanksgiving morning.
