Citing a drop in the strength of the U.S. dollar and confusion about border rules, the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., has reported disappointing numbers for its 2007 season, which closed Sunday.
The Shaw's 46th season, under artistic director Jackie Maxwell, drew strong presale numbers but failed to meet its projections for the year. It reported a total attendance of 265,648, a 5 percent drop from last year. Its box office revenues of $13.7 million were also down, from $14.6 million in 2006.
On the upside, the Shaw reported that opening-night attendance was the highest in five years.
The Shaw did could not immediately confirm how far below its projection the 2007 box office revenues of $13.7 million fell.
