>Amherst officer's tip leads to arrest of theft suspect

A tip from an alert officer closed a case in Cambria on Wednesday.

Peter McCormick, 22, of Griffin Street, Sanborn, charged Wednesday with petit larceny, is accused of opening a cash register Oct. 28 at the Marketplace, at Saunders Settlement and Townline roads, and fleeing with more $800. Bloodhounds were unable to track down McCormick, who was believed to have fled to a home a few blocks from the supermarket.

Police said McCormick watched a store clerk open the register and leave the area before making his move.

Amherst police Officer Brian Kern said he recognized the method of operation and contacted Niagara County sheriff's deputies.

Kern told sheriff's Sgt. Michael Filicetti that a man matching that description -- a description he read in The Buffalo News -- was caught doing the same thing three times at the Sears store in the Boulevard Mall.
