A 31-year-old Buffalo man was shot twice at about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday in a robbery attempt by two men outside a market on the city's West Side, Buffalo police said.
Timothy Pierce Jr., of Ashland Avenue, was being treated in the intensive care unit of Erie County Medical Center for gunshot wounds to his torso and leg. Police said Pierce is expected to survive.
The gunfire erupted just outside Bobby's Price-Rite Market, 326 W. Delavan Ave., near Potomac Avenue and Hoyt Street.
Pierce and his girlfriend had placed an order in the store and walked outside, where he was confronted by two men.
"Robbery seems to be the motive," Chief of Detectives Dennis J. Richards said outside the market, which was cordoned off with yellow crime tape. "The shooting took place just outside, and the victim went back inside the store."
At least one other customer, an elderly woman, was shopping for groceries inside the store at the time of the shooting.
Witnesses said the two assailants then ran away, one of them stopping to pick up an unknown object he had dropped on the street. The two then got into a a car, which was parked on Hoyt, and sped away from the scene, witnesses told police. Police described the car as light blue or gray Buick Century.
Police described the assailants as two black men -- one about 6-foot to 6-foot-1, his accomplice about 5-foot-6. Richards said it is unclear if Pierce knows his attackers.
West Side resident Dorothy Frost, 43, was walking to the store to buy soda and lunch meat when the shooting occurred. She was pushing her 19-month-old granddaughter in a stroller.
Moments after the shooting, Frost -- on the sidewalk across the street from the store -- watched homicide investigators and crime scene unit personnel comb the area for clues.
"It's getting dangerous around here," she said. "I was born and raised on the West Side. . .. I'm pretty afraid. I walk a lot in this area."
The neighborhood was the site of a homicide just two months ago. About two blocks away from Wednesday's attack, Darnell T. Moore, 19, was shot outside Discount Food Mart at 407 Grant St., after a dispute inside the store at 12:50 a.m. Sept. 2.
