Holiday lighting contest goes 'green' this year

Town of Tonawanda officials want residents to "think green" when it comes to their holiday lighting displays -- and they don't necessarily mean the color.

The town's Environment Commission and Police Department have announced an energy-efficient holiday decorating contest. Applications can be found at or picked up at the town supervisor's office in the Municipal Building, 2919 Delaware Ave., Kenmore.

Contestants must create displays that employ energy-efficient technologies such as LED light strands, rope lights and other energy-conscious decorations found at most local stores. Applications are due by Dec. 4; judging is scheduled for the evening of Dec. 10, and winners will be announced at the Dec. 17 Town Board meeting.
