Missing or confusing traffic signs.
The kinds of problems that are brought to Fix It's attention can vary from the serious to the amusing. It's our job to shed light on those problems and, to put it simply, get them fixed.
The good news this week is that's exactly what happened with a number of recent problems described in this column.
Among them is the case of traffic signs on South Ellicott Creek Road in Amherst that appeared to direct drivers to go in two different directions at the same time.
Initially, a sign with an arrow warning of a fairly sharp curve was next to a sign on the same pole pointing the opposite way.
Back in October, we contacted the Highway Department, which looked into the matter and corrected it within days of the Fix It story.
According to Amherst Highway Superintendent Robert Anderson, the problem was caused by kids who turned the signs around. That's not so funny when you realize how dangerous the winding road can be.
"We separated the signs and put them on two different poles," Anderson said.
Another situation involved the repaving of Maple Road between North Forest and Hopkins roads, also in Amherst.
According to Fix It readers, after the road had been resurfaced, there were "loads of manhole covers" below the road surface, which made that busy stretch of Maple quite bumpy.
Because Maple Road is a county road, we brought it to the attention of Erie County Highway Engineering Director Charlie Sickler. He explained that the road refinishing work that brings the manhole covers in line with the road surface had not yet been done.
Since then, the manhole work has been finished, according to Gerard Sentz, Erie County deputy commissioner of public works.
Fix It has tackled everything from faulty roads to poor street lighting to broken public drinking fountains.
