$95,000 grant to spur low cost housing effort

The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation announced a $95,000 grant to Housing Opportunities Made Equal toward plans to rehabilitate two long-vacant buildings on the northwest corner of Main and Ferry streets.

HOME, a civil rights organization, plans to relocate its offices to the first floor of 1542 Main St. and construct 10 units of affordable housing on the second and third floors of that building and an adjoining structure. The $2.2 million project will alter the face of one of Main Street's most visible intersections, HOME executive director Scott W. Gehl said.

Hochul raps Thruway over barriers, toll hikes

Erie County Clerk Kathleen C. Hochul Friday took a swipe at the state Thruway Authority for delaying plans to relocate the Williamsville and Lackawanna toll barriers and for proposing dramatic increases in toll rates.

The Thruway Authority Finance Committee Thursday approved a plan that would raise tolls by 20 percent over the next three years to help pay for a planned $2.7 billion highway construction improvement program.

"People attempting to conserve gas and save money by driving less would be penalized by higher tolls. That's just not fair," Hochul said in Friday.
