Temple job was Dickerson's demise
While University at Buffalo coach Turner Gill has done wonders turning around the Bulls' football program, there are other examples of African-American coaches who failed in their rebuilding efforts, essentially costing them their careers. One such case is that of former Temple coach Ron Dickerson, who was told by Penn State coach Joe Paterno not to take the Owls' job in 1992. Dickerson, the only black coach in Division I-A at the time, was eventually fired at Temple and is currently out of coaching.
