>Public safety panel to consider study

OLEAN -- The Olean Common Council's Public Safety Committee will consider long-range planning projects during a committee meeting scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. today.

The agenda includes a request by Alderman Linda Edstrom of Ward 4 for an appointed committee to study public safety and make recommendations within six months.

The committee meeting will follow a special question-and-answer session hosted by the Council at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building.


>Activist poet to read Thursday night at Bona

ALLEGANY -- Activist poet David Smith-Ferri will read some of his work at 7 p.m. Thursday in Murphy Auditorium at St. Bonaventure University.

Smith-Ferri's new book of poems, "Battlefield Without Borders," portrays his encounters with Iraqis during his two visits to Iraq and Amman, Jordan.


>Fundraiser by stores to aid Meals on Wheels

OLEAN -- Wilson Farms Neighborhood Food Stores and Sugar Creek Stores are asking the community to "Step Up to the Plate" in a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels, the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging program serving noon meals to more than 500 homebound seniors each weekday.

"Step Up to the Plate" logos can be purchased at Cattaraugus County Wilson Farms and Sugar Creek stores for $1 through Dec. 1. For more information, call 373-8032 or (800) 462-2901.


>Assistance available for needed home repairs

OLEAN -- NeighborWorks Home Resources will accept applications through Nov. 30 from single-family homeowners who need home repairs and meet income guidelines.

NeighborWorks has been awarded $300,000 to repair 14 substandard homes in Cattaraugus County communities.
The be eligible, homeowners must have incomes below 80 percent of the county's medium income. Homes may get repairs to meet minimum housing standards for lead hazard reduction and energy conservation.

The following towns in the Route 16 and I-86 corridors are included:

Route 16 corridor communities -- Yorkshire, Freedom, Machias, Village of Delevan, Town and Village of Franklinville, Farmersville, Lyndon, Ischua, Hinsdale, Humphrey; Town and City of Olean, towns and villages of Allegany and Portville.

I-86 corridor communities -- Conewango, Randolph, South Valley, villages of Randolph and East Randolph, Napoli, Coldspring, Town and Village of Little Valley, Town and City of Salamanca, Great Valley, Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians, Carrolton and Village of Limestone.
