Torey Lovullo is fiercely loyal to the Cleveland Indians and his ever-growing stock took an even bigger leap this year with the way members of the 2007 Bisons (think Asdrubal Cabrera, Jensen Lewis, Franklin Gutierrez, Rafael Perez) performed in crunch time for the Tribe.
The Indians don't want Lovullo to go anywhere but his fastest route to the big leagues might be through Pittsburgh. First rumored to be a prime candidate for the PIrates managerial job, Lovullo didn't end up in that chase. But now that John Russell has been hired, some of my moles reminded me of this fact: Russell had Lovullo as one of his coaches at the Triple-A All-Star Game last July in Albuquerque and they got pretty chummy the rest of the season when the Bisons and Russell's Ottawa Lynx would meet.
Russell is looking for a staff, one that would specialize in working with the kind of young players that will be all over the Pittsburgh lineup. Might Lovullo end up on the Pirates coaching staff? New GM Neal Huntington, a frequent visitor to Buffalo the last two years while with the Tribe, would surely rubber-stamp that choice. Should be interesting to see.
