Bishop to celebrate 25th anniversary Mass

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will celebrate a special Mass at 3 p.m. today in St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St., to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a bishop.

A letter from Pope Benedict XVI will be read.

Kmiec was elevated to auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Trenton on Nov. 3, 1982. He was named bishop of the Diocese of Nashville in 1992 and has served as Buffalo bishop since 2004.


Hearing set Wednesday on proposed budget

SOMERSET -- The Town Board will hold a public hearing on its preliminary 2008 town budget at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Town Hall, 8700 Haight Road.

The roughly $3.4 million budget holds the line on taxes, with a tax rate of $2.57 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, Supervisor Richard J. Meyers said.

The budget must be adopted by Nov. 20.


Plans for welcome center, museum to be displayed

NORTH TONAWANDA -- A proposal for a history and welcome center in the city will be on display at two upcoming events.

Information on the proposed Lumber City History Center and Gateway Cities' Welcome Center will be available before and during the Riviera Pops Concert on Nov. 11 in Riviera Theatre.

A more detailed presentation will be made during a showing beginning at 6 p.m. Nov. 26 in Pane's Restaurant. Registration for the latter event must be made by calling 213-0554.


Gift-wrap volunteers needed to aid charity

NIAGARA FALLS -- Volunteers are needed to wrap gifts for charity in the Fashion Outlets of Niagara.

The Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation's Charity Gift Wrap Booth is sponsored by the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls and Upstate Pharmacy and will be open Dec. 1 through Dec. 24 in the mall, 1900 Military Road, Town of Niagara.

There also will be holiday floral arrangements for sale created by people with developmental disabilities.

The booth will be open during all mall hours, including holiday hours, and interested individuals or groups are being asked to volunteer to take a four-hour shift.
