Joan W. Alford, active volunteer
Feb. 16, 1916 -- Oct. 30, 2007

Joan W. Alford, the widow of a prominent Buffalo pediatrician, Dr. Kenneth M. Alford, died Tuesday in her Buffalo home. She was 91.

Born Joan Wendt in Buffalo, she grew up in the city and in Derby. She attended Elmwood Franklin School and Buffalo Seminary, as well as the Farmington School in New England. As a girl she spent many summers in Muskoka, Ont., and traveled extensively with her family.

Mrs. Wendt was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for more than 25 years. During World War II, she was a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She also served on the boards of Planned Parenthood and the Visiting Nursing Association.

Her husband of 61 years died in 2001.

Surviving are a daughter, Anne Alford Surdam; a son, David H.; and a sister, Janet W. Warner.

Services will be private.
