This is why the Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the worst franchises in sports. After 15 straight losing seasons, the Bucs are going to hire a manager who was 55-88 in Triple-A last year at Ottawa. Yes, I realize John Russell has a Triple-A championship under his belt at Edmonton and had a strong playoff team at Scranton in 2006. And he's a former Pittsburgh third-base coach. And I trust implicitly the judgement of new GM Neal Huntington, the former Cleveland farm director.
But still, this is one uninspired choice. Maybe it will turn out like the Eric Wedge decision in Cleveland. But for now at least, it's not going to sell any tickets in one of the game's biggest bottomless pits.
