White challenges Meahl for tax receiver position

NEWFANE -- Incumbent Judith A. Meahl faces challenger Nancy A. White at the polls Tuesday for receiver of taxes and assessments.

The Republicans are backing Meahl, who has held the job for 18 years.

White describes herself as a lifelong Democrat and has her party's nod.

Meahl, who lives on Hess Road in Appleton, also has been secretary at Hess Road Wesleyan Church for 15 years.

White, a certified natural health professional, consults on nutrition issues and is a seasonal greeter at the Lockport Visitor's Center. She lives on Lockport-Olcott Road in Newfane.


New members welcome at Garden Club meeting

LEWISTON -- New members are invited to the Lewiston Garden Club meeting at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Red Brick School/Village Hall at North Fourth and Onondaga streets.

Club members meet annually to refresh the wreaths and bows and renew greens that will decorate light posts on Center Street during the holiday season.

The club is continuing the membership drive, and prospective members are invited. Hostesses for Monday's meeting are Anne Zohur, Claudia Marasco and Marcia Bellonte.


Panel to discuss Wal-Mart, but no decision is due

NORTH TONAWANDA -- The city Planning Commission will discuss the proposed Wal-Mart supercenter, but will not make any decisions on the project during Monday night's meeting in City Hall, City Clerk Thomas M. Jaccarino said.

The proposed store would be located on the former Melody Fair and Blue Bird bus terminal sites near the corner of Niagara Falls Boulevard and Erie Avenue.

Members of the Planning Commission also are expected to review a site plan for a proposed Walgreens on Payne Avenue between 18th and 19th avenues.


Greenway committee to meet on procedures

WHEATFIELD -- A group set to control $3 million a year for Niagara River Greenway projects will meet at noon Friday in the Niagara County Center for Economic Development.

The Host Communities Standing Committee, which consists of the State Power Authority, Niagara County, three municipalities and three school districts, will convene in the center, 6311 Inducon Corporate Drive.
