John Bailey Calabro, a 17-year-old featured SABAH performer, died Tuesday in his North Collins home after a long illness.
A Buffalo native born with numerous health issues, including cerebral palsy, John attended Aspire of WNY and the Erie County Health Center for Children School 84, where he was an honorary mailman. At the time of his death, he was a student at CHC Learning Center, where he was the 2006 prom king and was named the honorary president of Antarctica.
John was a featured skater with SABAH, now known as Skating Athletes Bold at Heart, a nonprofit organization that helps those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities learn to skate. He was featured in The Buffalo News on a couple of occasions for his skating ability.
John's favorite activity was attending amusement parks. He traveled to Darien Lake every summer and to Disney World every year, enjoying the Space Mountain and Superman rides with the help of his father. He also was a parade marshal at Fantasy Island.
He enjoyed outdoor activities with his father, John L., especially snowmobiling and personal watercraft. And he was a Lothlorien Therapeutic Rider at an East Aurora therapeutic riding center for handicapped children.
He is survived by his parents, John L. and Teresia; two brothers, Malcolm and Aidan; and a sister, Alexandra.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Ave.
