Darkness has fallen for Game Two of our Section VI championship tripleheader at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
We're live at the Class C final between Cleveland Hill and Falconer, which won last year's C title on the way to the state championship game. According to our Prep Talk blog poll, which closed at kickoff, 68.1 percent of 116 voters think Cleveland Hill will win.
7:09 p.m. Kickoff is just a little late from its scheduled 7 p.m. time. Not too bad. I've got some writing to do about Depew's win in the Class B final, but I'll do my best to keep you updated with any scores as well as the ends of quarters.
7:20 p.m. A great pass from Rhakeem Wiggins to Joe Sanders on third-and-9 put Cleveland Hill at the Falconer 2, where on the next play Peter Westbrooks ran in for the TOUCHDOWN. Wiggins added a conversion run for a 8-0 Cleveland Hill lead with 7:00 left in the first quarter.
7:32 p.m. End of the first quarter. Cleve Hill intercepted the ball deep in its own territory and now the Golden Eagles have a third-and-13 at its own 9.
7:42 p.m. Falconer gets a TOUCHDOWN when Alex Ognibene ran in from 1 yard out but their two-point conversion pass fails. Cleve Hill leads, 8-6.
7:58 p.m. Halftime: Cleveland Hill 8, Falconer 6.
8:16 p.m. Kickoff of the second half, with Falconer starting with the ball.
8:36 p.m. End of a hard-fought (or uneventful, depending on which way you look at it) third quarter with Cleve Hill still up, 8-6. The lack of drama was fine with me - helped me get my Class B story for tomorrow's paper finished.
8:42 p.m. Wiggins ends a Falconer drive in Cleve Hill territory by intercepting the Falcons. First-and-10, Cleve Hill at its 36 with little over nine minutes to play.
8:49 p.m. With 4:44 to play, Falconer calls a time out facing a third-and-8 at its 49.
8:50 p.m. A keeper by quarterback Mitch Schrecongost makes it fourth-and-2 ....
8:51 p.m. ... and a run by Austin Spicer gives Falconer a first down at the Cleve Hill 40 with a little over three minutes left.
8:53 p.m. On fourth-and-1 at the Cleve Hill 31, Schrecongost narrowly avoids being tackled before handing off to Ognibene, who runs up the middle for a first down at the 19 and the clock ticking under 1:20 ...
8:54 p.m. With Falconer fans still fired up over the first down, Austin Spicer carries to the left side for a TOUCHDOWN with 1:12 to play. Whoa.
8:55 p.m. Ognibene burrows in the right side for a two-point conversion and 14-8 Falconer lead.
8:58 p.m. Cleve Hill gets a first down at its 42 with 1:01 left. Another pass by Wiggins gets Cleve Hill to the Falconer 49. Second-and-1 with 53 seconds left.
9:00 p.m. Wiggins spirals a pretty pass over the middle to Darius Stallworth for a first down, and a personal foul penalty gives Cleveland Hill a first-and-goal at the 7 with 40 seconds left.
9:01 p.m. Wiggins puts a perfect option pitch to Westbrooks to the right side for the TOUCHDOWN and a tie game at 14-14 with 33 seconds left.
9:02 p.m. Cleveland Hill goes for two, and Wiggins takes a direct snap to the right side and he's in! Cleveland Hill leads, 16-14. Wow. What a finish. But it's not over ....
9:05 p.m. Looks like it will come down to this. Eight seconds left. Falconer calls timeout at its 41. Let's see what the Falcons come up with. They had a lateral ruled a forward pass on the kickoff return.
9:07 p.m. Falconer gets a screen pass completed, and there's one lateral, but a Cleveland Hill tackler crushes the ball carrier and ends the game. Final score: Cleveland Hill 16, Falconer 14. The Golden Eagles win their first title since 2000.
