Hello again on a sunny Friday afternoon from Ralph Wilson Stadium.
We're live at the Class B final between East Aurora and Depew. According to our Prep Talk blog poll, which closed at kickoff, 63.9 percent of 122 voters think Depew will win.
4:32 p.m. We're not off to a good start. A scoreboard malfunction means the time will be kept on the field.
4:44 p.m. Depew is off to a great start. Matt Strychalski follows a 43-yard gain with a 17-yard TOUCHDOWN run, and Ross Cole adds the extra point kick for a 7-0 Depew lead. And the scoreboard is up and running. Whew.
4:47 p.m. Wow. East Aurora strikes back quickly, going 84 yards in four plays, with Dan Dechert finishing off the drive with a 5-yard TOUCHDOWN run. Ryan Sweet adds the extra point and we're tied at 7-7.
4:53 p.m. Depew comes right back in four plays, with Greg Osika running for a 40-yard TOUCHDOWN. He's the second man through and EA is having trouble keeping track of who's got the ball (and sometimes I'm getting fooled myself). Hey guys, it's tough to update this blog thing and take my notes with all this scoring.
4:58 p.m. An interception by Brad Barth sets Depew up with a short field, and the Wildcats make quick work of it. On the first play of the drive, Osika goes right up the middle and is hardly touched on a 14-yard TOUCHDOWN run. Barth goes in on a two-point conversion run to make up for a missed kick on the second touchdown and it's Depew 21, East Aurora 7.
5:01 p.m. End of the first quarter.
5:11 p.m. Fans (and sportswriters) get to catch their breath as EA goes on a long, 14-play drive but the Blue Devils come up empty when a 29-yard field goal attempt goes wide left with 5:50 left in the second quarter.
5:32 p.m. Depew has a nine-play drive stunted by a holding penalty; East Aurora gets the ball back but can't score. EA was running out of time as moved to the Depew 29 with less than 20 seconds left when Nelson Holland nabbed an interception to end the drive, and the half. At halftime: Depew 21, East Aurora 7.
5:51 p.m. Depew kicks off and the second half is underway.
6:02 p.m. After East Aurora punted away its first drive, Depew gets to the EA 14 but comes up short on a fourth-and-2.
6:06 p.m. After the first-quarter slugfest, its turned into a grindfest. No scoring since the back-and-forth early on.
6:10 p.m. End of the third quarter. Depew facing a third-and-6 at its 47. EA needs another stop and a quick score, but Depew has kept the vaunted EA passing attack in check.
6:16 p.m. Again Depew fails on a fourth-and-short. It stumbles on a fourth-and-2 and EA takes over on its 32 with 9:01 to play.
6:24 p.m. We've got a ballgame. On second-and-4 at the Depew 9, Scott Drosendahl delivers a soft pass to the right side to an open Karl Stern, who steps into the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN with 5:30 to go. Ryan Sweet's extra point makes it a 21-14 lead for Depew.
6:30 p.m. A Depew punt gives EA the ball at its 28 with 3:40 left.
6:32 p.m. Drosendahl hits Bourne on a 13-yard play for a first down at the EA 42.
6:34 p.m. Kevin Dudkowski, with help from Barth, sacks Drosendahl, putting EA in a third-and-13 hole at its 39. EA calls timeout with 1:58 to play.
6:35 p.m. Drosendahl hits Phil Bossman for a first down at the Depew 46 with less than 1:20 to go.
6:39 p.m. Drosendahl second straight incompletion. Third-and-10 at the Depew 34. 29 seconds left.
6:40 p.m. On fourth-and-10, Drosendahl hits Dechert across the middle for a first down. First and goal at the Depew 10 with 18 seconds left! Wow. EA calls its final timeout.
6:44 p.m. After an incompletion, Drosendahl hits Dechert, who steps out of bounds at the 2 with 12 seconds left.
6:45 p.m. Facing a third-and-goal at the 2 with :06 left, Drosendahl tries a keeper but is stacked up by the Depew line. The clock runs out. Final score: Depew 21, East Aurora 14. Depew wins its first Section VI football championship.
