Dick Jauron seems to be preparing himself for the worst. At his first media day press conference Wednesday, the Bills head coach said he was excited about the start of a new NFL season. But Jauron wasted little time reminding us of his team's overall youth.
""I don't think there's anyone in this (press) room that's not aware of how young this football team is,'' Jauron said, ""and the youth that we're counting on to perform at a very high level. We have a lot of questions to answer.''
He's right, of course. I counted six key defensive players who are 23 years old or younger. This defense is too young and inexperienced. I think the organization has been planning all along for a year or two down the road, when the key young guys mature.
But Jauron doesn't have to remind us that his team is young. Two weeks ago, he said he needed more time. True or not, it sounds like he's making excuses. The good fans will be patient with this group. They know the team is young and aren't expecting miracles overnight. But the coaches are still supposed to make this team better and show signs of improvement.
