What more does Fred Jackson need to do to earn a roster spot with the Bills? Jackson has looked terrific in the preseason games. He was a productive running back in the European league. Against the Titans last Friday night, he certainly looked good enough to be an NFL backup.
Shaud Williams has done little to distinguish himself as an NFL back. Jackson is clearly a better option at running back. Williams has been a contributor on the Bills' fine special teams, but it's not as if he's indispensable. He played in only five games last season and carried twice from scrimmage.
Jackson has earned a spot in the NFL. Why have training camps and preseason games if players show they belong in the league but fall victim to rote decision-making by the coaching staff? If the NFL insists on charging people money for these preseason games, the games should have some meaning. Jackson is the second-best pure runner on the team. Anthony Thomas is a solid veteran and pass blocker, but Jackson could be the team's best option if something happens to Marshawn Lynch.
