Slawko G. "Jerry" Michaliw of Sloan, a former tavern owner and retired bakery manager at Wende Correctional Facility, died Saturday in St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga. He was 60.
Born in Germany, he came to America with his parents as a child and was a 1965 graduate of Emerson Vocational High School, where he studied culinary arts.
He first worked at Paul's Pies, then spent almost 12 years at Ken Paul Bakery before going into the bar and restaurant business, first opening Jerry's Place, then Flo's on Broadway in Cheektowaga. Prominent in the bar and restaurant scene, he was known as "The Boss" and "Coach."
In the early 1990s, he became bakery manager at Wende Correctional Facility, where he also taught prisoners how to bake.
A car enthusiast and automobile collector, he was active in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and volunteered for a number of parish events.
A funeral liturgy will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in Pietszak Funeral Home, 2400 William St., Cheektowaga.
