Synchro swimmers sweep the golds

Every gold medal awarded in synchronized swimming at this year's Empire State Games is hanging around the neck of a woman from Western.

After sweeping the medals in the figure, solo, duet and trio competition, the Western women clinched their final gold in the team event on Sunday. The winning team included: Laurie Wakelam, Trisha Melber, Lauren Spatzer and Rina Hanna-Gregoretti of Tonawanda, Jessica Grogan of Orchard Park, Jessica Bagley of Kenmore, Katie Gillies of East Aurora and Meaghan O'Shei of West Seneca.

In the last four years in non-team events, Western has conceded only one silver and one bronze to the other five regions.

MEN'S ARCHERY: A father and son from Boston earned bronze medals. Kenneth Haberer was third in the open all-around competition with 2,297 points after a first at 30 meters and a third at 50. His son, Kenny, clinched the all-around bronze in scholastic with 2,290 points. He was fourth at 40 meters and third at 30.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Erinne Cunningham (Jamestown) netted 18 points in the scholastic's 80-76 victory over Hudson Valley to clinch the gold. The team is coached by Chris Durr (Williamsville East) and Bill Shaw (Lockport). The open team lost to New York City, 71-67, in the bronze-medal game. Amherst's Stephanie Bennett (23 points) and Brittane Russell (22) led Western.

CYCLING: Western women won the 24-mile team trial and the men led the way in the 40-mile team trial. Western took the overall team gold.

MEN'S GYMNASTICS: In open finals on Saturday, Keith Stumpf of Williamsville beat out teammate Michael Morse (East Amherst) for the gold on the pommel horse and took the gold in floor exercise. Kenneth Byrd (Buffalo) won the bronze on the floor.

WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS: In the open finals on Saturday, Buffalo's Kayla Gray took gold on the balance beam and silver in the floor event while Lancaster's Courtney Connors clinched gold in the vault.

WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY: Western had to settle for bronze after a 5-4 loss to Long Island after leading, 4-3, with less than nine minutes remaining. Long Island scored the game-winner with 1:20 left. Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park) and Kelsey Welch (East Amherst) had a goal and an assist each for Western while Grace Waters (Snyder) contributed two assists. Kimberly Sass (East Amherst) made 28 saves.

MEN'S LACROSSE: Western took bronze in an 8-6 triumph over the New York City. Joseph Resetarits of Hamburg had two goals and an assist to bring his Games total to eight goals and three assists. Casey Rich of Amherst contributed a goal and an assist.

MEN'S SOCCER: Western clinched bronze in the open competition with a 4-1 win over New York City. Gavin McInerney, former Canisius College goalkeeper, completed a second-half hat trick for Western in a 15-minute span. The scholastic team also earned bronze, shutting down Central, 5-1. Nathan Bechtold (Lockport) scored the only first-half goal while Jonathan Hughes (Williamsville) added the final assist. Solid defense held Central to five shots.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Roseanne Simiele of Rochester scored in the 63rd minute to give Western the gold medal with a 1-0 win over New York City. Jenny Griffin (Williamsville) had a goal as the scholastic team beat Central, 3-0, to win bronze.
