UB senior finding nothing but net

The Western men's open soccer team has scored four goals in its two wins -- and each goal has been scored by University at Buffalo senior Lee Catchpole.

Catchpole netted a hat trick to give his team a 3-0 win over Long Island on Friday during day two of the Empire State Games. He scored the lone goal in Thursday's win over New York City. Buffalo's Gavin McInerney made four saves for the shutout.

Western and Hudson Valley shared the overall medal-count lead with 93 each.

ATHLETICS: Taylor Eldridge of Buffalo won the scholastic shot put with a throw of 11.51 meters. Buffalo swept the open high hurdles races as Lakeisha Perez won in a time of 15.56. Reggie Rucker knocked more than a second off his eighth-place time from last year to win gold Friday in 14.39.

BASEBALL: Western (1-3) beat New York City, 7-0, behind the pitching of Matthew Jimenez (Elma), but lost to Hudson Valley, 10-3.

BOXING: Justin Keith nabbed the silver in the light midweight division after dropping a 3-2 decision in the final.

WOMEN'S CYCLING: Buffalo's Shelley Isaacs earned silver in 2:44.36.

FIELD HOCKEY: Western rebounded from a 4-2 loss to Long Island with a 1-0 shootout win over Hudson Valley. East Amherst's Chantae Miller scored the winner.

GYMNASTICS: Western took gold in the scholastic all-around team division, and Aaron Benson of Cheektowaga won the silver in the all-around individual competition with a score of 54.2. The women's open team also won gold in the all-around as Kayla Gray (Buffalo) placed fifth individually.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY: Western beat Central, 6-3, as Patrick Sullivan (Derby) had two goals and one assist.

WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY: Snyder's Grace Waters and West Seneca's Erica Owczarczak each had a goal and an assist in Western's 5-1 win over Hudson Valley.

MEN'S JUDO: Buffalo's Dursun Tursunov won silver in the 60-kilogram class.

WOMEN'S JUDO: Amherst's Kaitlyn Barone won silver in the 48-kg division while Carol Boulet of Amherst tied for the bronze in the 57-kg.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: After losing in a shootout to Hudson Valley, 3-2, Western needs to beat Long Island today to advance to the bronze-medal game.

MEN'S SWIMMING: Kenmore's Daniel Carver and East Amherst's James Losi finished off Western's gold-medal triumph in the open 800-meter freestyle relay. Losi also finished second in the 400.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING: The open and scholastic 400 medley relay teams each earned bronze as Amherst's Paige Gutowski aided the scholastic team's efforts, while Amherst's Sarah Morris and Williamsville's Janelle Munroe were on the open team.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING: The Western women swept the medals again in the duet and solo competitions. In the duet, Trisha Melber (Tonawanda) and Jessica Bagley (Kenmore) won the gold. Tonawanda's Laurie Wakelam won individual gold.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Jonas Westbrook of Buffalo won gold in the lightweight division with a lift of 566.57 pounds. Cheektowaga's Mark Miskovski lifted 507.05 pounds to earn silver.

WRESTLING: In Greco-Roman, East Aurora's Nicholas Czapala (165-pound division) and Arthur Garvey (275 pound) both won gold, and Lockport's Jeff Mye won his bronze-medal match in the 128-pound competition.
