The sixth annual FANN Cup, a benefit lacrosse tournament played by fans of the National Lacrosse League, will be held Saturday at the Nike Base-Hamburg Town Arena, 2982 Lakeview Road, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is an event for amateur players of lacrosse, with a goal of raising funds for charity. The tournament includes auctions (including prizes donated from NLL teams) and will have food available. Spectators are welcome.
Some of the items up for auction are game-worn shin pads from Bandits goalie Steve Dietrich, a game-worn jersey from Bandits defenseman Billy Dee Smith, a 2004 NLL championship game-worn jersey signed by late coach Les Bartley, a worn practice shirt John Tavares used when he played in the Junior B league in the summer Ontario lacrosse league, and an All-Star jersey signed by the West Division team.
More than 175 players are anticipated, traveling from across Western New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, Rochester and, new to the tournament this year, Chicago. To date, the FANN Cup tournaments have raised approximately $31,000 in charitable contributions.
This year's tournament will benefit Carly's Club, a Roswell Park Cancer Institute charity that benefits children afflicted by cancer and their families. For more information, call Deb McAllister at 866-0270 or visit www.fanncup2007.com.
