Cause sought in fire in Jamestown building

JAMESTOWN -- A Saturday evening fire at the Landing, a warehouse facility at Jones and Gifford avenues, remained under investigation Monday.

Flames broke out at about 7:30 p.m. on the loading dock in the back of the building, which stores industrial equipment for multiple tenants, including Cummins Engine Co.

Residents of Livingston Avenue reported the blaze, said Jamestown Fire Battalion Chief Bill Johnston. Crews soon realized the fire was actually coming from Jones and Gifford avenues.

"First-arriving crews found heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the building in the loading dock area by the railroad tracks," he said. "It was a difficult area to access. A hydrant line was stretched in, and attack lines were set up to knock down the fire."

Johnston said fire damage was confined to the loading dock, while smoke and water damage affected the main part of the building.

The fire battalion reported extensive damage to the loading dock. No damage estimate was available. The interior of the building was not affected by the fire.

No injuries were reported.
