I like the trend that's developed of naming your court after a famous former player or coach -- and thankfully many schools are going that route rather than selling the name to a corporate sponsor. And with curiosity building in St. Bonaventure's program around new coach Mark Schmidt, who has done a good job of recruiting and hand-shaking so far, this is a terrific time to name the new Reilly Center court after Bob Lanier.
The October 12-13 ceremonies surrounding the dedication of "Bob Lanier Court" should be memorable and it's good to see Lanier commit to attending. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say about the program's new direction because I never felt Bona's most visible basketball alum said enough during the school's 2003 recruiting scandal.
Lanier never answered media inquiries during some of Bona's darkest hours -- including several interview requests made to his handlers by The Buffalo News. He spoke to one Florida paper one time and caused a mild blip on the radar by saying he might be interested in becoming the head coach. But it would have been nice for him to give distraught fans some hope during the horrendous times that spring.
Let's hope Saturday's announcement means Lanier will be there for Bona from this point forward, both in good times and in bad.
