SOMETHING TO READ
Pretty Is by Elizabeth Holmes (Dutton, $16.99).
This interesting first novel by an author from Ithaca, explores the subject of mean girls. The movie, "Mean Girls," was set in high school, but kids will tell you that bullying starts long before that.
Erin is dreading the start of middle school, because her dorky older sister Monica will be there -- and Erin doesn't want to become a target of teasing, too. Monica is tall, she dresses strangely, doesn't shave her legs, doesn't know how to talk to people and doesn't have any friends, other than her pet guinea pigs. Erin doesn't want anyone at her summer camp to even know Monica is her sister -- until a crisis at camp helps her see her sister in a new light.

Think faster. Play better. The Basketball Intelligym ($99.95, intelligym.com) is a computer program that is made to help you train to be a better basketball player. It helps you make better decisions and become a team player. It will make you better than you ever thought possible. The Basketball Intelligym is designed for ages 16 and older, but we were able to get a lot out of this. If you are younger than that, you may need some help from an adult in understanding the directions. Nick Collison, an NBA player for the Seattle Supersonics, says in an ad that by the time he completed 10 training sessions, the results were unmistakable. If you're looking for help in perfecting your skills, this is for you. We rate this a 4 (out of 5).
