The WNY Sting Gold girls softball team became the first ever New York State Champions in the 16-and-under bracket of the NSA Girls fast-pitch tournament at Sunshine Park in West Seneca. NYS Director Ed Warhol awarded the team honors by announcing a bid to play in the Class-A NSA World Series at Rockville, N.C., and also having each player and coach sign a game ball that will be displayed along with a team picture in the NSA Hall of Fame Museum in Lexington, Ky.

Sting Gold went undefeated in the 2007 New York State tournament.

The team is: Brittany Barren, Erica Lynn Comisso, Kayla Czuprynski, Alyssa Luksch, Julia Mariacher, Clare McKenna, Loren Pavlovic, Brittany Pawlowski, Kristen Rohe, Kristin Sullivan, and Natalie Vazquez.


The New Era Diamond Girls Black have won the 14-under NSA State Softball Championships in Hamburg. They are: Meghan Hennessy, Meg Mankowski, Megan Smith, Jordan Dudish, Kelly Kaczor, Kelli Gleiser, Taylor Swiatek, Casey Frantz, Jamie Nash and Jessica Banning. The Diamond Girls start play this weekend at the Pony National Softball Tournament in Cary, N.C.

BASKETBALL: Men's teams are needed for a league on Mondays and Thursdays beginning July 16 and July 19. Call Joe at 839-9330.

FOOTBALL: Coaches at all levels are invited to a seminar on July 26 from 6-8 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs. Brian Polian, linebackers coach at Notre Dame, will speak on linebacker play and defense. Dave Hack, former Hamilton Tiger-Cats offensive tackle in the Canadian League and current offensive line coach of Erie Community College, will speak on all aspects of offensive line play. SOCCER: The Hamburg Monarchs Soccer Club will hold tryouts for the 2008 travel season at the Lakeview Road Soccer Complex in Hamburg. Tryouts for boys and girls ages 8-16 will be July 20, 28, 30 and Aug. 2. The club also will run advanced player development camps for boys and girls ages 11-18. The boys camp will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day from July 16-20 for boys and from July 23-27 for girls at the Nike Base Soccer Complex, Lakeview Road, Hamburg. Visit:
