HOMECOMING -- Adirondack author David M. Gardner, an alumnus of Portville Central High School, is the guest author at 7 p.m. today at the meeting of the Portville Library Book Club in Portville Free Library, 1 S. Main St.
He will join the group for a discussion of his book "Whispers From the Stone Age: How Knowing About Nature and Humanity Can Make You Be Happier." Copies of his book can be purchased at the library or Portville Pharmacy, 12 S. Main St. For information, call 933-8441.
A GRAND OCCASION -- If you're at Town Commons on the Grand Island Town Hall grounds for the town-sponsored concert featuring the Road Runners at 7 p.m. Tuesday and happen to be hungry and thirsty, look up the members of the Grand Island Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary, who will be selling hot dogs and soft drinks. In case of rain, the concert will be Thursday.
The program includes dedication of the park to the late Marion E. Klingel, who died in 2001. Longtime town historian, she was Grand Island correspondent for The News for more than 30 years and editor of the Island Dispatch.
FUN TO LEARN -- Youngsters ages 8 to 12 can learn about fossils, astronomy, ecology and rocketry in the Science Adventure Summer Day Camp at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg.
The camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for five days, will be held next week and again Aug. 6 to 10. Rates are $150 for members of the Hamburg Natural History Society and $175 for non-members. For information and registration, call 627-4500 or visit www.penndixie.org.
