OLAF FUB SEZ: According to "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" author and playwright Jean Kerr, born Bridget Jean Collins on this date in 1922 or 1923, "Marrying a man is like buying something you've been admiring for a long time in a shop window. You may love it when you get it home, but it doesn't always go with everything else in the house."


HIGH FLIER -- If the morning coffee klatch at Tim Hortons in the Walker Plaza in Amherst seems a little more animated than usual this week, don't be surprised. The guys came up with $430 to buy one of their buddies, Larry Panepento of Snyder, a ride Saturday in the Liberty Belle, the restored B-17 bomber plying the skies here over the weekend. For Panepento, 83, it was just like old times. He was a bombardier aboard a B-17 in World War II.


WAG THE DOG -- If dog parks are a good thing for man's best friends and their owners, then how about a dog picnic? The occasion is the annual Buffalo Greyhound Adoption Family Picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Shelter 29 in Chestnut Ridge Park (Newton Road entrance) in Orchard Park.

Owners of greyhounds and other breeds, their pets (on leashes, please) and families are welcome. Hot dogs, hamburgers and cold beverages will be provided by the BGA folks, but they could use hot and cold dishes, salads, snacks and desserts. They also need volunteers to help out. To volunteer or contribute a dish to pass, contact Marilyn or Greg Janiga at 662-2953 or


TRUE GRIT -- Sign spotted by Friend of Fub and poet Joyce L. Wilson in a dentist's office in Kenmore: "Be true to your teeth or they may be false to you."


STOP THE PRESSES -- Alumni of the former Buffalo Courier-Express, the city's morning newspaper, which closed in 1982, will hold their 25th anniversary picnic from noon to 6 p.m. Monday, rain or shine, in the clubhouse in Sheridan Park off Ensminger Road, Town of Tonawanda. Former staffers and their families are welcome. A steak dinner will be served, along with hot dogs and other picnic favorites. Admission is $22. Checks should be payable to CE Picnic Fund.
