In its first official actions of the 2007-08 school year, the Lockport School Board saw two new board members sworn into office, elected officers and awarded $61,668 in contracts to repair parking lots and sidewalks at three district facilities.
Newly elected board members Jon A. Williams and Edward P. Sandell were sworn into office by Assistant Superintendent Gerald J. Stuitje. The two men won first terms on the board during the May school board elections.
The board also re-elected three board members as its officers: Marietta Schrader, president; John A. Linderman, vice president; and Allan W. Jack, secretary. Schrader and Linderman were elected to those posts in February after former Board President W. Keith McNall resigned his board seat to become a member of the Niagara County Legislature.
The board then awarded contracts to repair or resurface sidewalks and parking lots at Lockport High School, Emmet Belknap Middle School and the Board of Education building, 130 Beattie Ave.
The contracts were awarded to the low bidders.
Pro Construction of Bergen won the sidewalk replacement and repair contracts for its $32,350 bid. Four contractors submitted bids.
R. Johnson Enterprise Inc., also of Lockport, won the parking lot repair contract with its low bid of $29,318. Three companies bid on the project.
Stuitje said the contracts were awarded because the sidewalks and pavement at those sites "were in disrepair and needed to be fixed."
He said the board had the money available from the 2006-07 budget's general fund and opted to get the work done.
He said the project did not call for replacing whole parking lots, "but we are fixing up a good portion of some of them."
