The New Era Diamond Girls black team won the 14-under division of the Aunt Rosie's Softball Tournament last weekend at the Amherst Pepsi Center. The 28-team field included squads from four states and Canada. The Diamond Girls went 8-1, shutting out their last two opponents.
The Diamond Girls beat the Pittsburgh Power Colton, 8-0, in the finals and the Ajax Raiders from Ontario, 12-0, in the semifinals.
The team advances to the New York State NSA Softball Tournament in Hamburg on Thursday-Saturday. They will then head to Cary, N.C. to represent Western New York in the Pony National Softball Tournament where there will be approximately 140 teams from across the Eastern United States.
Racquetball players Mary Zapalowski of Lockport and Joan Dolansky of Newfane competed in the 2007 National Senior Games in Louisville, Ky. last week. Zapalowski won the Silver Medal with a 7-1 record, falling in the final match to one of the top-ranked women in the U.S. Dolansky finished fourth with a 4-3 record, competing against at least four women ranked in the top 10 nationally. In doubles they teamed to claimed the silver.
Two former Fredonia State players have signed with the New York State League of Professional Baseball, a first-year league.
Noah Huard of Buffalo signed with the Oneida Barge Bucs, while Shawn Ridgway of Wayne, Ont. is a member of the Herkimer Trailbusters. Both are right-handed pitchers.
Huard, who recently completed his senior season, was the Devil's top starter the past two seasons. This past spring, he was 3-5 with a 3.66 ERA in 51 2/3 innings.
Ridgway finished his collegiate career in 2006 posting an 0-6 record with a 6.75 ERA in 45 1/3 innings.
BASEBALL: The Milwaukee Brewers will be holding a open try-out camp at Mercyhurst Northeast (Erie, Pa.) on July 22. Pitchers and catchers are asked to report at 9 a.m., position players at 11:30 a.m.
BASKETBALL: The McKinley basketball camp still has limited space for its boys middle school camp July 16-20. Only a few spots remain for the high school camp July 23-27. Cost is $100.
