Aug. 28 election to fill two vacant board seats

The Starpoint School Board on Monday set up an Aug. 28 election to fill two board seats vacated by Kelly V. Zarcone and Mark J. Montazzoli.

The board also called for a referendum on that same date seeking voter approval to spend $207,000 to purchase 83 acres of land that border the north side of the district's Mapleton Road campus.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day in the Starpoint Middle School gymnasium.

School Superintendent C. Douglas Whelan said board candidates should submit their petitions to run for office by the end of the month. He said a specific legal deadline has to be determined, but he expects it will be by the end of July or very early in August.

District Clerk Ruth Pirinelli said Zarcone and Montazzoli left the board for personal reasons after winning re-election in May.

She said the top vote-getter of the election will serve a three-year term. The second-place candidate will finish the last two years of the term vacated last summer by former board member Mark Domino, who had been replaced by Montazzoli.

Pirinelli said the board wants to purchase the land of the late Gordon Haseley because it borders the district's campus.

In other business, the board elected officers for the 2007-08 school year.

Diane J. Braun, who served as board president for three years -- from 2002 to 2005 -- was elected to that position once again Monday. Gary D. Braun, no relation, was re-elected to a second year as vice president.
