Brenner is appointed Smallwood principal
The Amherst School District has announced the appointment of Lydia A. Brenner as the principal of Smallwood Elementary School.
Brenner, the current assistant principal at Amherst Central High School, will take over from Barbara Marotto, who served as principal for 13 years after a career in the Buffalo schools.
Brenner has several years' experience as a teacher and staff developer at the elementary level. For four years, she was a math coordinator, focusing on the elementary grades.
Superintendent Laura Chabe said in a news release that Brenner also has experience in special education, academic intervention services, literacy initiatives and statistical analysis.
Marotto will stay on for the summer as a substitute administrator to help Brenner with the transition.
Chabe also announced that Tom Ferraina will become director of curriculum and staff development.
He will help with the Smallwood transition and provide instructional support throughout the district. He previously was a teacher on special assignment.
