A grandmother was criminally charged Friday in the death of her 6-year-old granddaughter, who was shot by a 10-year-old cousin at the grandmother's Scio home last month.
State police charged Debra L. Jaeckle, 47, of Peterson Hill Road, with second-degree manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.
Troopers said the fatal shooting occurred June 22, when Cassandra Congdon was visiting her grandmother's home. The girl's cousin -- also Jaeckle's grandchild -- was firing at targets with a .22-caliber rifle at the time. One of the his shots accidentally hit Cassandra in the head.
Cassandra was taken by ambulance to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville before being airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where she died June 23.
Jaeckle was arraigned at the Allegany County Court in Belmont before County Justice James E. Euken on Friday.
State police issued a statement on the arrest but were not available for further comment.
