Richard E. Ryan, a decorated Cheektowaga police officer, died June 29 in his home in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after a battle with a rare form of cancer. He was 61.
Mr. Ryan became an officer with the Cheektowaga Police Department in 1972. During his career, he earned three medals of honor and four awards for outstanding performance. He retired in 1995 after 23 years.
He moved to Port St. Lucie 12 years ago. He was also involved in the International Policemen's Association, Elks Lodge and Blue Knights Association.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; two daughters, Deborah and Lisa; and a sister, Marilyn.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 2 p.m. today in St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 1395 George Urban Blvd., Cheektowaga.
