Senior nutrition program now has a van service

TOWN OF NIAGARA -- A county-run van service is now available to transport senior citizens to and from the Senior Nutrition Program at the Community Center in Veteran's Memorial Park on Lockport Road.

The program, open to all Niagara County residents who are at least age 60, provides a hot lunch between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday each week. To use the van service or to make a reservation for the nutrition program, call Sue Kotlarz at the Community Center at 297-5243, Ext. 201.

The county's Office for the Aging also operates a wheelchair van to take seniors to and from medical appointments. Two weeks notice is requested, and seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call transportation coordinator Jennifer Schumacher at 438-4038.

Concert and fireworks rescheduled to tonight

NIAGARA FALLS -- The city rescheduled its Fourth of July concert and fireworks to 7 p.m. today in Hyde Park because of rain. The free event will feature a concert by Aediem and the Byrd's Nest Band. Fireworks will begin at 10.

Kazeagin re-elected head of city School Board

NIAGARA FALLS -- The Niagara Falls School Board re-elected Robert Kazeagin Jr. to a second year as board president during its reorganization meeting Thursday. Don J. King was also was renamed vice president.

Bus service expanded for the Taste of Buffalo

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will expand service this weekend to accommodate riders traveling downtown to the Taste of Buffalo.

The NFTA will add cars to metro Rail on Saturday, with trains departing about every 15 to 20 minutes.

Beginning at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, trains will depart Erie Canal Harbor Station and University Stations approximately every 20 minutes. The NFTA will also extend rail service and the last outbound train will leave Erie Canal Harbor Station at 8 p.m., instead of its usual 6:10 p.m.

To prepare for the festival, volunteer crews today will begin closing Delaware Avenue to traffic from Chippewa Street, south to Niagara Square. While outbound traffic will be allowed to leave the area, inbound traffic not related to the Taste of Buffalo will not be allowed along that stretch of Delaware Avenue.

The Taste of Buffalo runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Control board to meet today at ECC City Campus

The Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority meets at 2 p.m. today in the auditorium at Erie Community College's City Campus.

The control board reviews county government contracts worth $50,000 or more and has contracts to review.
