John W. Higgins, Tonawanda city worker Oct. 11, 1919 -- July 4, 2007

A Mass of Christian Burial for John W. Higgins, a retired City of Tonawanda Public Works Department employee, will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, 71 Adam St., City of Tonawanda.

Mr. Higgins died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Hospital. He was 87.

A Buffalo native, he was a 1937 graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and served stateside as a sergeant in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

After his military service, Mr. Higgins was a machinist at Bell Aircraft for nearly 18 years. He became employed with the City of Tonawanda Public Works Department in 1976 and retired in 1985.

He served as chairman of the City of Tonawanda Democratic Committee. He also was a member of Local 1604, International Association of Machinists, and the recording secretary and president of Allan Herschell Union.

He was a life member of Tonawandas Post 264, American Legion, and Fort Erie Branch 71, Royal Canadian Legion. He also was a member of Niagara Hose Company No. 3, the Tonawanda Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Association and the Firemen's Association of the State of New York.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church from 1954 to 1985, when he moved to Clearwater, Fla. He rejoined the parish when he returned to Western New York in 2002.

His wife, Dorothy E. Harding Higgins, died in 1969.

Mr. Higgins is survived by a son, J. Dennis; a daughter, Diane; and a sister, Marie E.
