Suspect, 23, arrested in Salamanca assault

SALAMANCA -- A Salamanca man was arrested Tuesday night on charges stemming from an assault several days ago.

Lucas G. Wilder, 23, was charged with assault and criminal mischief and remained in custody at the Salamanca Police Department on Wednesday night.

Police said the charge stems from an altercation on Summit Street. Wilder allegedly injured the victim and damaged the victim's eyeglasses.

Driver of pickup that struck officer sought

CUBA -- Cuba police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck a Cuba police officer directing traffic following a fireworks display at Cuba Lake, then drove away without stopping.

Officer Lance R. Edwards was struck from the side and knocked to the ground while at the intersection of Route 305 and South Shore Road at about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Edwards was transported to Olean General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police are looking for a brown or gray pickup truck, possibly a newer Chevrolet with an extended cab. It may have damage to the left front fender and may be missing its driver-side mirror.

Driver of swerving car faces charges in Ellery

ELLERY -- A Jamestown woman faces several charges after being stopped while swerving on I-86 in the Town of Ellery on Wednesday morning.

Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies spotted a car driven by Christina M. McVeigh, 37, swerving as it was headed east on the highway at about 10:42 a.m.

Deputies charged McVeigh with driving while impaired on prescription medicine and, after finding a 3-year-old child in the rear seat, with endangering the welfare of a child.

She will answer the charges in Town of Ellery Court at a later date.
