They've been on opposite sides of some initiatives, but today members of the Stiglmeier Park Steering Committee are cooperating with the Cheektowaga parks staff to erect a gazebo at the park.
The committee has started a campaign to raise $10,000 to pay for the gazebo. "We thought it would be quite nice if we could do something nice for the park," said Lawrence Watson, chairman of the committee.
The gazebo would be 10 feet to 12 feet in diameter and would be placed on the southern end of the pond near the Losson Road entrance to the park. Town employees would erect the gazebo, said Parks Division Director John J. Jaroszewski Jr.
"I think it will really add to the beauty of the pond," he said.
The committee has not always gotten along with the town. The group spoke out against the deer bait-and-shoot program before it was started three years ago. One of the bait-and-shoot locations is Stiglmeier Park. The committee also strongly objected to fireworks in Stiglemeier Park as part of the town's Winter Recreation Celebration.
The gazebo, which will be placed next to the administration building, will be open-sided and have a shingle roof.
"We hope it will be an asset in the park," Watson said.
Jaroszewski said parents and grandparents bring children to fish at the pond. The town also is considering installing a fountain in the pond to help eliminate the algae buildup that happens often in July and August when the weather gets hot, he said.
Watson said the committee is accepting donations for the gazebo and hopes to raise enough money to purchase it and have it installed by this spring.
Checks can be made out to the Town of Cheektowaga, in care of the Stiglmeier Park Steering Committee. They can be sent to Watson at 1259 Como Park Blvd., Depew, NY 14043.
