>Physician will discuss history of Arab poetry
OLEAN -- A history of Arabic poetry's beginnings in Mesopotamia and its development through modern-day usage will be part of a presentation by Olean physician and poet Saddiq Al-Sammarai at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Olean Public Library.
Other programs scheduled in February and March include Nigerian poet and scholar Biodun Ogandayo, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8; a workshop by children's book author Susan Williams Beckhorn, 11 a.m. Feb. 17; reading by poet Francine Sterle at 7 p.m. March 8; and a poetry workshop by Sterle from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10.
>Student entries sought in environmental event
Schools may register by March 2 for a March 30 entry deadline in the 16th annual "I*MA*GREEN*NATION" Celebration, a statewide competition that encourages student awareness of environmental issues.
State Sen. Cathy Young, R-Olean, is calling for local student entries for the Senate-sponsored competition among students in Grades one through eight. Winners will attend a May 15 awards presentation and tour the seat of state government at the State Capitol in Albany.

Last year, more than 600 students submitted projects that explored issues relating to solid waste and recycling, and more than 1,200 students and their teachers traveled to the capital to participate in the competition events.
>Corrections Department seeks exam applications
The state Department of Corrections is accepting applications for its upcoming corrections officer exam.
The test will be given statewide April 14. Applications are due by Feb. 26.
