Robert L. Bettinger of Depew, a retired bread route salesman and active churchman, died Wednesday under hospice care in Sisters Hospital after a long illness. He was 75.
A native of Buffalo, he was a graduate of Kensington High School and served as a tank driver in the Army during the Korean War.
After he left the military, he worked with his father and a brother at Bond Bread Co. and later for Wonder Bread for a total of 40 years until his retirement in 1993.
Mr. Bettinger, a stamp collector, helped establish slow-pitch softball league competition among teams in the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, serving as president of the league.
He was chairman of the Catholic Charities drive at Blessed Sacrament Church for 36 years and also was active in its Holy Name Society, serving as president two times.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Rose Marie Neuner; a daughter, Karen Stachura; two sons, Timothy and Craig; and two brothers, Donald and Lewis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 French Road, Depew.
