Hamburg girls take ECIC II lead
Hamburg took a half-game lead in the ECIC II girls basketball standings Wednesday night with a 54-40 win at Amherst. Katie Medina had 17 points, Alyssa Zemla contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, and Liz Schappert had 10 steals and 10 assists for the Bulldogs, who are 8-1 in the division. Jodi Battaglia and Liz Reid had 14 points each for Amherst.
Idle Williamsville East is 7-1. The teams will square off Friday at East. Hamburg won the first meeting Dec. 12, 38-36.
Gross' 34 leads O'Hara
Garrison Gross scored 34 points and Tim Young made a pair of foul shots with 8.5 seconds left to nail down the victory as Cardinal O'Hara edged Bishop Timon-St. Jude, 84-82, in Monsignor Martin Association play.
Gross, a 6-foot-5 senior, also had nine rebounds while James Ewing had 19 points and 20 boards for the Hawks, who picked up their first league victory. Freshman Darrie Young had 19 points for the losing Tigers, who remain winless (0-4) in the league.
Nichols boys hockey wins
Nichols improved its record to 5-2-2 in the Canadian Independent Schools hockey league with a 6-2 victory at Ridley College (Ont.). Daniel Mullan led the Vikings with a pair of goals while goalie Pat Stafford had 16 saves. Ridley comes to Dann Memorial Rink for a 7 p.m. game Friday night.
