The Wales Town Board, during a public hearing Tuesday night, aired details of plans to rezone land to accommodate the move of a landscaping business .
Jason Burford, president of Birch Grove Landscaping and Nursery, wants to have 10 acres of a 90-acre site at 11724 Big Tree Road rezoned to commercial from agricultural so he can move his business from Bennington. The board asked for more detail on drainage and berms, size and height. Supervisor Rickey Venditti said the Planning and Conservation Advisory boards reviewed the plan and consider it a good fit for the area.
Venditti said he and other board members were concerned initially that this would be the fourth business not adhering to the town code.
"We are in the process of revising our code book; but while we are at it, we should determine if the codes should be changed regarding Route 78, Route 20 and Route 16, where the depth for commercial zoning is 300 feet.
In other matters:
* Russ Scherrer, owner of Auctions International, 11617 Big Tree Road, was given 10 days to clean up the site and get rid of extra cars kept there in violation of town code and a special-use permit.
* The board will raise the cap on its tax exemption for veterans to $120,000. The current cap is $60,000. Venditti noted veterans currently get an exemption of 10-15 percent; 25 percent if in combat; and 50 percent if disabled. The cap has not been changed since 1997.
