Local resources for caregivers

* American Red Cross classes, which can be taken singly, at a cost of $40 for a two-hour session. They are offered at the Delaware Avenue headquarters on an ongoing basis. Phone 878-2395 or visit the Web site at

* Erie County Caregiver Resource Center offers several programs under the Erie County Department of Senior Services, including six-week classes called "Powerful Tools for Caregivers." They are held at several locations, at different times of the day. The cost is $25 per course and is covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Western New York and Independent Health.

There are also courses on "Alzheimer's proofing" your home; counseling for caregivers at their own home or any spot convenient for them; case management; and suggestions for adult day care and home care. Call 858-8526.
