Incentives offered for cancer screening

BATAVIA -- A member of the City Council has come up with a novel way to encourage participation in a medical referral program to detect cancer.

Rose Mary Christian, who has long represented the 6th Ward, is offering $10 gift certificates to Wal-Mart or Martin's to anyone referring uninsured men and women to the screening program for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, a program of the Healthy Women Partnership Genesee.

Opera House to hold sale of formal wear

The Lancaster Opera House is planning a bridal sale in an effort to raise funds for the arts agency.

Donors have given the opera house -- 21 Central Ave. -- hundreds of wedding gowns and other formal wear to sell when it holds the event from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday. Admission is $2.

The opera house will hold an advance sale from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The $10 admission price will include refreshments.

Most of the gowns on display will be sold for between $50 and $150, according to event organizers, even though the items would sell for much more at retail prices.
