The Siena men's basketball team's home arena was renamed the Times Union Center on Jan. 1 in a sponsorship agreement with the local newspaper. The Canisius men's basketball team certainly won't want to read all about Thursday night's game.
Four double-figure scorers helped Siena build a double-digit lead early on as the Saints coasted to a 70-48 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Canisius before an announced 5,019 at the building formerly known as the Pepsi Arena. Siena swept the season series from Canisius; the Saints won, 78-60, in Buffalo on Jan. 3.
Michael Haddix, a 6-foot-6 senior, had 17 points and 11 rebounds as Siena (9-6, 5-1) moved into first place in the MAAC by a half-game over Marist and Loyola.
The Saints went on a 13-2 run to go up, 23-11, led by 37-24 at halftime, and the lead was in double digits the rest of the way. Kenny Hasbrouck had 16 points while Tay Fisher and Edwin Ubiles came off the bench to each score 13.
Darnell Wilson provided the only good news on the stat sheet for Canisius (6-10, 1-5) with a 22-point, 11-rebound night. Wilson hit 10 of 14 shots and had three assists and three steals. The rest of the Golden Griffins shot 10 for 46 during a 20-for-60 night (33.3 percent) that included a 2-of-13 showing from three-point range. Jovan Robinson had 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting while Corey Herring and Frank Turner combined to shoot 2 for 16.
Canisius' next game is at Saint Peter's at 2 p.m. Saturday.
