Playing favorites

It was a film buff's dream when organizers of the Buffalo Film Seminars asked the audience to choose the spring lineup. Folks voted for their favorites from the 182 films screened during the 13 installments of the BFS, held at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Center, 839 Main St.

That "fan favorite" lineup opens Tuesday with Buster Keaton's silent masterpiece, "The General"; it will be followed by Jean Cocteau's lushly poetic telling of "Beauty and the Beast," Jan. 23; "Triumph of the Will," Jan. 30; and "Pandora's Box," with Philip Carli on electric piano, Feb. 6.

Also: "Rules of the Game," Feb. 13; "Bicycle Thieves," Feb. 20; "Tokyo Story," Feb. 27; "Touch of Evil," March 6; "Lawrence of Arabia," March 20; "Contempt," March 27; "Dr. Strangelove," April 3; "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," April 10; "Nashville," April 17; and "Singin' in the Rain," April 24.

The Tuesday sessions begin at 7 p.m. with a discussion led by the University at Buffalo's Diane Christian and Bruce Jackson, followed by the film and a post-movie talk. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for students with ID and $5.50 for senior citizens. For more information, visit or
